George West Storyfest: Good Times, Great Stories
by Mary Margaret Campbell
George West, TX (September 28, 2009)--Stories of all kinds, lies, music, and fun are on tap in
George West, the Storytelling Capital of Texas, November 7 at the 21st annual George West Storyfest.
Come hear storytelling at its finest. Featured this year are renowned storytellers DeCee
Cornish, Bil Lepp, and Sheila Phillip. You can also hear top Texas tellers like Mary Ann Blue, Larry Thompson, Consuelo Samarippa, Dennis Gaines, and others tell stories ranging from folklore about Texas and around the world to cowboy tales and poetry. And don’t forget the ghost stories after dark!
Tap your feet to the music of Houston Marchman, Lonestar Bluegrass Band, Riptide, the cowboy duo of Andy Hedges and Andy Wilkinson, the Rockport Gospel Force, A Different Breed, and Las Arias. Do some early Christmas shopping at arts and crafts booths. Eat tasty food like fajitas, burgers, and funnel cakes prepared by local nonprofit
groups. Watch Johnny Neal from Pearsall braid leather and rawhide into ropes, bosals, headstalls, and more, crafts he learned from old Mexican vaqueros. Visit the teepee of Lasaro “Chief” Arriola, of Comanche/Apache descent, and wife Julie Lani and admire the many Native American artifacts they will have on hand. Learn about the South Texas environment at the Texas A&M University Corpus Christi Wetlands Exhibit.
Children can spend the day playing games, petting animals, and having fun in the Children’s
Area. Car enthusiasts can vote on their favorite car on display at the Classic Car Show.
Storyfest Saturday opens with the sound of the George West school band leading the famous
Little Red Wagon Parade. Individuals and groups decorate wagons and pull them by hand on the festival grounds. Storytelling and music alternate on three stages, with continuous entertainment throughout the
day and into the evening.
Be sure to attend the Texas State Liar’s Contest © at mid-afternoon. Come see if
Donna Ingham, the first Texas State Champion Liar, can tell a big enough lie to regain the title.
You won’t want to miss the United Freestyle Stunt Team, featuring some of the best riders in BMX freestyle, skateboarding, and inline skating. Your jaw will drop, and your heart will stop as you watch these
athletes perform.
Then after dark, dance on the street at the traditional Street Dance from 9:00 -12:00,
featuring Texas singer-songwriter Mark McKinney, with Steven Franks opening.
On Sunday morning, Storyfest partners with a local church to host Sacred Stories. Everyone is
welcome to listen in.
So come to George West November 7 and be a part of the good times and great stories at
George West Storyfest. Visit www.georgeweststoryfest.org for more information and directions.
